I trained as a painter obtaining a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Staffordshire University in 1995. My paintings and drawings currently focus on the natural world. I am drawn to the fields, woodlands and grasslands and the animals and insects that inhabit the land. There is a great deal of direct observation in my work; carefully looking at the subject using hand and eye, but memory and invention also play a part. I prefer to work directly from life rather than using photographs so sometimes a piece will take several years to complete. Believing it is an artist’s job to show their subject in a way not seen before, to see it with fresh eyes so to speak, I am continually looking to develop and grow my practice.
